Vice Minister Gao Hucheng Answers Questions for Changing Name of CECF
2006-10-17 08:41  MOFCOM

On Oct 15, Premier Wen Jiabao announced on opening and celebrating ceremony for 100th session of CECF that it will be called the "Chinese Import and Export Commodities Fair" as from the 101st session. Today, reporters interviewed Mr. Gao Hucheng, Vice Minister of Commerce over such event.

Mr. Gao said that changing the name from Chinese Export Commodities Fair to Chinese Import and Export Commodities Fair was a significant measure for realizing basic balance in import and export through arduous struggles. It represented the strategic spirit of seeking mutual benefit and win-win situation as well. Since reform and opening-up, China's foreign trade developed fast. Total trade value in 2005 amounted to US$1,442.1 billion, with US$762 billion of export and US$660.1 billion of import. Both export and import increased fast. Meanwhile certain trade surplus exited.

He added that China always advocated implementing policy of keeping basic import and export balance, and seeking no large amount of trade surplus. National Five-Year Plan had clearly put forward to actively expand import. China's market was open and we would like to provide convenience for foreign commodities entering China. Since entering WTO, China had greatly reduced tariff level, banished various non-tariff measures. Changing the name of Canton Fair, which had long history, wide impact and large scale in China, from "Chinese Export Commodities Fair" to "Chinese Import and Export Commodities Fair" aimed to utilize such international trade platform, provided convenient channel for foreign excellent commodities entering China's market.

The changing represented objective need in self-improving of Canton Fair. In the past 50 years, Canton Fair was always a showcase for Chinese export and attendees mainly consisted of domestic companies and overseas purchasers. Henceforth, Canton Fair should absorb overseas companies and domestic purchasers. Such change coordinated with international exhibition developing rule and would further enriched content of Canton Fair, expanded influence, improved degree of internationalization. It also in our favor to better use international advanced experience for reference, improve level in holding exhibition and make Canton Fair the world topping exhibition soon.

Mr. Gao said after changing of the name, specific method over attracting businesses, companies and holding the exhibition was under discussion. Function of Canton Fair would be further improved while keeping a significant status and role in Chinese export.
