Gao Hucheng: China Will Make Effort in Balancing Trade
2007-06-01 05:50  MOFCOM

Vice Minister of Commerce Gao Hucheng stated that China should not solve its trade imbalance issue simply by restraining its export businesses, but should slow down the excessive growth of China’s trade surplus by means of transferring the growth mode of China’s economy and foreign trade as well as expanding imports.

Vice Minister GAO Hucheng stated that China would adjust its tariff rate on June 1, which aims at restraining the exports of high energy-consuming, high-pollution and resource products, which not only has a short-term effect on adjusting the growth mode of China’s economy and foreign trade, but also has more profound influence in the long term.

Vice Minister GAO Hucheng said although China’s trade surplus has seen a rapid growth from January through April this year, China’s government would work harder to further grow China’s imports in a bid to attain a better trade balance during the latter half of this year.

Statistics showed that in April, China’s trade surplus reached 16.88 bn USD while its export and import volume amounted to 97.45 bn and 80.57bn USD respectively, which went up by 26.8% and 21.3% over the same period last year. From January to April, China’s export and import volume totaled 349.52 bn and 286.21 bn USD respectively, which rose by 27.5% and 19.1% over April in 2006, and resulted in a trade surplus of 63.31 bn USD.
